October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Thursday, October 1, 2009

Dear Friend,

We are proud to be Maryland Democrats today as we mark the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. While many people look at this issue and think, "not me," in the U.S. domestic violence affects 1 in 4 people in their lifetime. We can make a difference and in Maryland we have.

Join us and make a difference.

This year, thanks to the leadership of Governor Martin O'Malley, Lt. Governor Anthony Brown and a Democratic majority in our legislature, Maryland is in the national forefront in preventing domestic violence and assisting survivors. People in need should take solace in knowing that today new laws go into effect strengthening the response to this threat.  Now laws are on the books requiring those with final protective orders against them to surrender all firearms in their possession.  This new tool offers additional protection for those individuals escaping violent homes and re-starting their lives.

Join us and make a difference.

As the month of October begins, we invite you to learn more about preventing domestic violence in our communities and assisting those who are dealing with the aftermath of domestic violence.  This is not a problem that affects only a certain percentage of the population—this affects all of us.  As part of our commitment to the community, the Maryland Democratic Party and our Women's Leadership Network will be reaching out throughout October to lead on domestic violence awareness. We will be partnering to provide toiletries to shelters across Maryland and we will be hosting a series of events - Coffee and Conversation - where Domestic Violence Awareness will be on the agenda.   If you are interested in staying informed or want to get involved in our efforts, please sign up for additional updates from us this month.

Warm regards,
